How to Hang Tiles on a Wall
- Apply a layer of glue to the wall that is 18 inches (0.32 cm) thick. Begin putting the glue at a bottom corner about 1 tile length away from the bottom and sides of the wall, leaving room for the edge floor tiles. Scoop a golf ball-sized amount of glue onto a notched trowel and apply enough adhesive in a thin layer on the wall to hang 2–3 tiles at a time.
- You may need to go over the glue with the trowel a few times to ensure that it’s thin and level. Pre-mixed glue is less costly and ideal for wall tiling. If you bought a powder adhesive, mix it according to the package recommendations until it has the consistency of peanut butter.
- Make grooves in the glue using the trowel. Keep the trowel at a 45-degree angle to the wall. To form the grooves, move the trowel horizontally across the wall, providing steady pressure as you distribute. This will produce the ridges in the glue that are required for the tile design to adhere to the wall.
- Check the adhesive box to ensure you’re using the correct sized notches for the ceramic tiles to attach to the glue. Most trowels feature two sets of notches of varying widths.
- Continue the row with more glue and tiles after hanging the first marble tile. Line up your first tile carefully and push it into the glue, twisting it slightly to generate suction before placing it in its place. Then, continue to place tiles in rows or columns according to your pattern. Apply extra glue to the wall once you’ve covered the majority of it, and then continue hanging tiles in your design.
Remember to work in tiny portions at a time, putting glue just where you’re tiling. You may need to use a wet cloth to remove the glue that has oozed out from between the polished tiles.
